Holbox
An island a couple of hours north of Cancún, situated at the tip of the Yucatán peninsula, in between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
The island is full of protected wildlife and known for its varied avian life and biodiversity. It’s part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve.
It’s car-free and the only way to get around is either walking, cycling or renting a golf cart (600 pesos for 2 hours, 800 pesos for 4 hours and 1000 pesos for the whole day until 5pm).
There are several beaches that are a must-see for sure, though the whole island is a delight and perfect destination if you want peace and tranquility. Remember…no cars.
Playa Punta Cocos
This beach is tucked away on the western edge of the island of Punta Cocos. Known to be a pitstop for flamingos but they only get there very early in the morning. So, if you want to see them, go as early as possible.
The water in Punta Cocos is very shallow. You can go 50 ft. out in to the sea and still have water up to your knees. The water is a bit blurry and silty. It contains a lot of seaweed and a translucent type of blob that I haven’t quite been able to figure out.
Some say it’s the bioluminescence that Punta Cocos is known for. This phenomenon refers to the reaction of plankton in the water as soon as they come in contact with oxygen through either the waves or movement of the water. They will glow a blue light in the dark. If you were to swim here, your body movements will cause the same effect and it looks as if you are glowing in the water. This is completely safe by the way. They have special bioluminescent tours in Holbox where you can experience this.
Others say, these could be shark eggs. Though, I found this a lot harder to believe, as there were so many of them.
Punta Cocos has a couple of beach restaurants and stalls where you can buy fresh coconut water. There are also free sun beds you can use.
How to get there?
From Cancún you can take a bus up to Chiquila which takes 2x hours and will be around 300 pesos single fare (15 dollars/12 pounds).
In Chiquila, right next to the bus station, you will find the ticket booths for the ferry. There are two companies that each go every hour.
- 9 Hermanos (blue ferries) goes every hour on the hour (9.00 am, 10.00am, 11.00am etc.)
- Holbox Express (red ferries) goes every hour on the half hour (9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am etc.)
Note! Remember that these are two different companies, so if you missed your 9am slot with 9 Hermanos, you cannot hop on the next one at 10am with Holbox Express. You will have to wait an hour or buy a new ticket.
A single fare will cost around 300 Mexican pesos (15 dollars/12 pounds). Children under the age of 12, pay 160 pesos (8 dollars/ 6 pounds).
The ferry ride takes only 25-30 minutes.
Playa Holbox
This is the main beach of the island, situated right next to the town centre. Here you will find plenty of beach clubs and restaurants to indulge your every need. Spa’s and massage retreats, hammocks and sun-beds under a big umbrella made of straw (your typical Mexican advertisement photo).
Unlike a lot of beaches along the east coast of Yucatán, Holbox doesn’t seem to have much sargassum. This is a brown-coloured seaweed that washes ashore most beaches in and around Cancún. It’s harmless but it doesn’t look very nice and has an odour. Thanks to the island’s concave shape and its location which allows the seaweed to be carried away by the currents, Holbox has slim to no sargassum.
At the far east side of the beach, the water is still very shallow and you can make your way via the water to Punta Mosquito.
Playa Punta Mosquito + Isla de la Pasión
These two are often combined in one tour. Punta Mosquito is on the northern part of Holbox and after the last few hotels on the eastern edge of Holbox beach is where you start walking for 20 -30 minutes to reach Punta Mosquito.
What is it exactly? So it’s definitely a beach! One of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen. Perfect white sand and crystal blue water. Because the water is very shallow you need to go quite far out to reach it. The perfect place to swim, walk or wade. You will find lots of kite surfers here as well. Be mindful that taking your belongings isn’t recommended because although you won’t dip into the water entirely, things can still fall. You won’t completely be able to enjoy yourself if you carry stuff on top of your head.
Be mindful that Playa Mosquito and Isla de la Pasión are not that close to one another. Recommended is to go by boat. Swimming out in the open water is not advised. There are local boats offering rides for no more than 150 pesos. The island is a 15 minute boat ride away from Punta Mosquito. It is known for its unique eco system which attracts avian life and waterfowl. Big chance you will get to see more flamingos here.
Isla de la Pasión is a perfect getaway, if Holbox wasn’t already a secluded paradise to begin with. You can chill on the beach in a hammock, go birdwatching, explore the beach, go for a swim or kayak.
