Best beaches in Cancún

Say Cancún and everyone will think of “beach”. With access to the Caribbean Sea, you can expect pristine, crystal blue water and white sandy beaches. So, let’s sum up that list of Cancún’s beaches and how to get there.

Hotel zone

When staying in Cancún the closest beaches are along the coast of the Hotel Zone, or the area where all the luxurious resorts are located. It’s true that all resorts have their own access to parts of the beaches but there are plenty of public beaches where you can go to without having to deal with security chasing you out.

All these beaches can be reached with the R1 or R2 bus (red/orange) which connects the hotel zone with downtown Cancún (R stands for Ruta). It runs 24/7 but with no particular schedule. A single fare costs 12 Mexican pesos and there are bus stops anywhere along the big boulevards like Avenida Tulum and Kukulkhán.

The further down south along the coast you go, the wilder the sea will be. You need to pay attention to the colour of the flags (red means “no swimming”, orange means “swim with caution” and yellow means “safe to go).

Most of the beaches to the south will have the red flag and in the most southern beaches you will be advised against swimming as there might be sharks.

It all depends on seasons and local announcements, but thread with caution. Most people only sunbathe here and dip their feet in but aren’t allowed to go too far into the sea.

In geographical order:

  • Playa Caracol/Las Palmas; has a port from where ferries from and to Isla Mujeres depart.
  • Playa Gaviota Azul; the only beach inside the curve, a beachgoer’s favourite. It is directly connected to the party area of Hotel Zone with its biggest nightclubs having their access to this beach. When you sunbathe here, it won’t be quiet as the beach clubs will always have DJs pumping up the sound system.
  • Playa Forum
  • Playa Chacmool
  • Playa Blanca
  • Playa Marlin
  • Playa San Miguelito
  • Playa Ballenas
  • Playa Delfines
  • Dolphin Beach Point

Playa del Niño

A special mention to this little, hidden beach where mostly locals come. If you walk 10 minutes up north of the ferry port Puerto Cancún, you will come across a cute little beach, tucked away behind palm trees and beach restaurants. The restaurants get their fresh seafood themselves as you can see their boats parked right in front of them, giving it that authentic and cosy beach village vibe. You won’t find many tourists here as most will be at the hotel zone.
